Basketball Homecoming 2012ish

I’m very happy that all of you have decided to join us for the Seventh Annual Purdue Basketball Homecoming brought to you by The Stone Cold Tailgating Club. This is a great chance for us to get together and see each other after the long layoff after the end of football. This will be our first New Years Eve extravaganza in Lafayette as well.

The Boilers will be facing a tough test with the Illini coming to Mackey on Sunday. We have eight seats together ($34 each by the way) and then my two regular season tickets. (Brendan will be playing with the Boiler Brass.)

Brendan and Dawn will be bringing Amelia and thanks to Indiana’s archaic Liquor Laws they can’t bring her in Harry’s. (I guess they are afraid that a 1 year old is going to trot off and order a beer?) So we will plan on meeting them for lunch before we head over to Harry’s. Final lunch destination will depend on the crowd and what we’re feeling.

After the game we will plan to head back to the house at 1814 for dinner. We will be letting the crock pots do most of the cooking while we’re at the game so dinner should be just about ready when we get home! We plan on serving a ham from Lange’s in Michigan City, Pineapple and Cornbread Stuffing, Vegetables, and of course homemade desserts!

We plan to spend the evening at the house playing games and catching up before we pop the corks at midnight to ring in 2012!

We got to see a great win by the Boilermakers over the $uckeyes last weekend and we can’t wait to see them do the same to the Hawkeyes! We had a great time in the stands and at the tailgate last weekend and I hope we have a repeat of that this weekend. Hard to believe it but Purdue can close out the home slate with a 6-1 record if they win on Saturday. As much as it pains me to say it we can hardly argue against Hope's results at home this year.

We originally were going to fry up a turkey in honor of Thanksgiving but changed our mind when we realized this would be the last Stone Cold Tailgating Club event for the year. (Greg and I are skipping The Bucket Game this year.) We will follow our tradition by making the season closing meal a big pot of chili with grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. Since it projects to be a little cool on Saturday morning I will also be whipping up a batch of mulled cider that can be “doctored” to your liking.

Last week we had four first time Stone Cold tailgaters and we will have another “first timer” at the tailgate this weekend; none other that the “Hipster Slayer” himself Jeremy Golden will be joining us! This will not only be Jeremy’s first Purdue game but also his first Big Ten game. He’ll finally get to experience real football weather instead of that soft weather they have down in the SEC. Unfortunately we don’t pay our players as well as they do in the SEC so the level of talent will likely be a notch below what he’s used to seeing.

We will plan on meeting in the W lot on Saturday morning, hopefully towards the front of the lot just like last year. The W lot is across from the Slater Hill and the Stone Cold Tailgating Club spot is marked by the gold square.

Since this is Jeremy’s only night on campus we figured we would show him the mecca of our drinking years: Harry’s. The kitchen at Harry’s is open until 11 so we will plan to just have dinner on campus. If we can get there earlier than 7:30 we will. We will need to call it a relatively early night as we have an 8:00 call the next day which means rolling out of bed by 7:30.

Before we get to the game information I want to let everyone know that we’re doing a canned food drive this week for the local food pantry. As we have discussed over the last two years we’re trying to use the Stone Cold organization to provide some service back to the community. Any non- perishable items are appreciated! I messed up and missed the coats for kids donation at Homecoming, so I’m hoping to make this drive a little more successful.

After a great Homecoming win against Illinois the Boilers have gone 0-2 on a tough two game road trip. They return to Ross-Ade Stadium this weekend to take on a vulnerable tO$U team that has seemingly righted the ship after reeling early in the season owing to their cheating ways being revealed last winter. This will likely be another tough one for the Boilers but hopefully we can pull out a shocker much like the last time tO$U visited us in West Lafayette.

We will be doing our ever popular make your own pizza tailgate this weekend. We’ll have all the toppings you will need to create a personal pie that is all your own! There will also be ingredients for salad if that is more to your tastes!

The weather projects to be cool but not cold this weekend. We will plan to have some of the heating elements with us, but I don't suspect that we will need them.

Homecoming 2011

Through the years at Purdue I have experienced so much.

I have seen many a football game and with my friends and family’s help my tailgating prowess has only grown. Lest we forget where we come from, there were the early years of the Breakfast Club.

The Boilers will be facing a scrappy but turnover prone Illinois team for Homecoming, it will be a tough test of whether or not they are moving forward. If we can beat Illinois, or at least compete, then I would say Danny Hope buys himself one more season at the helm in West Lafayette. If this is an ugly showing then Morgan just might bite the bullet and eat that last year on Hope's contract.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the arrival of two of the biggest fools to ever walk this fair campus we will be going back in time. I ask you to join me in thinking back to your freshman year at college. When you are a freshman at Purdue and have had a few beers on a Friday night the “drunk munchies” can only be answered in one proper way: a burrito on Chauncey Hill.

There are two schools of thought on the burrito: Taco Bell or La Bamba. (Anyone that says Chipotle has obviously graduated in the last three years and is excluded from the conversation.) To finally settle this argument we will be offering beef burritos in the “Taco Bell” style and chicken burritos in the “La Bamba” style. Let us finally decide which the superior method for quelling the munchies is!

Well, this could be one of two teams that would be considered “beatable” on the Boilermakers remaining schedule. I’m having trouble getting excited for this after last week's beat down. I would guess that we’ll be lucky to get 30K in the stadium as the students are on fall break on Monday and Tuesday and this team hasn’t given them a reason to stick around on Saturday.

We’re going to do “kegs and eggs” this week, a breakfast menu consisting of eggs, sausage, and coffee cake. Look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday!

Oktoberfest Tailgate: Get Your "German" Up

With a week off to prepare let’s hope that the Boilers are ready for primetime with the Irish coming to town for an 8 p.m. kickoff. This is probably the biggest game of Danny Hope’s career as this could make or break the Boilermaker’s season. With the Irish’s penchant for self destruction on offense (15 turnovers through 4 games) I like our chances in this one! Personally, I am hoping to see Brian Kelly’s head turning bright red at some point during the evening.

This is the Boilermaker’s first prime time game since ND’s 2009 visit; a last second 24-21 wins for the Irish. (This of course will always be remembered as the first game in which Danny Hope showed his inability to manage time outs.) The crowd was rocking that night and I expect the same this year! Let’s bring our “A” game to cheer the boys on to victory!

We will be getting amped up for the game by doing our traditional Oktoberfest Tailgate featuring all your German favorites. We’ll have pretzels, brats, German potato salad, Hacker-Pschor and Hofbrau Marzen beer, and of course sauerkraut balls!

As we will have a very large group this week (around 35 people) I’m going to ask that everyone please be considerate to the other tailgates around us and not crowd them too badly. We also will ask for some help in tearing down at the end of the tailgate so that everyone can make it to the stadium in time for the pregame!

The Athletic’s Office has designated this as “gold and black” game in order to try and give the stadium a unified look. If you have ever seen the “white out” on TV or in person at Penn State you know that this type of thing looks great and in my opinion contributes to the “big game” feel. I encourage us to please all participate!

The chart below shows the sections as demarcated by the University and the chart below tells you what section you are in. The SCTC season tickets are in a gold section which means I’m going to have to forgo my usual “Section 120” jersey. (I’m not sure how I’m going to find my section now, but I guess I will manage.)








There will be a small group of us teeing off at 10:00 am in the John Purdue Club outing on the North Course. We will be trying to park the cars early so that we can guarantee our usual spot and will be starting the tailgate roughly four hours before kickoff.

Fins UP!

The sharks are starting to circle Danny Hope’s coaching stint and they will be circling at our “Jimmy Buffet” theme tailgate this weekend. Ahhhh, smells like bad football in the water doesn’t it? Rice finally got a win against a BSC conference foe (first since 2001) thanks to a gift wrapped victory courtesy of our Boilermakers. I’m starting to think that Danny Hope is NEVER going to figure out end of game management.

I would like to say that I’m highly confident in us getting a win this year against the I-AA (yes I know it’s not called that anymore but I don’t care) Southeast Missouri State Cardinals but us losing wouldn’t shock me at this point. From a talent standpoint we should have a significant advantage on Saturday but I’m sure that we can still find a way to screw it up.

Since it doesn’t appear that we will be going anyplace tropical for bowl season we might as well get tropical in our minds with a Jimmy Buffet theme. We’ll be putting down a heavy dose of Hurricanes and Margaritas on Saturday morning to get prepared for the football we’re about to watch. We will have the shrimp boiled and the burgers on the grill so come on down to tailgate with us!

Rocky Top

With the news of Rob Henry’s ACL tear we start the season on a rocky note to go along with our Tennessee based theme of “Rocky Top” for Saturday. I don’t know what to say anymore as Purdue Athletics’ inability to go more than 3 months without announcing an ACL tear, it is mystifying. What shaped up as a winnable game before the season now has me worried since MTSU was bowl eligible out of the Sun Belt conference last year and we’re starting a QB that has played all of 22 minutes since arriving on campus in 2009.

The team does look to be much improved with the return of Ralph Bolden and let’s not forget a secondary that outshined their youth last year. We still don’t know for certain who will rush the passer on D, pass the ball on offense (Terbush?), or catch the ball on offense though. I’m encouraging everyone to look forward to our tailgate party more than the game this year, I guarantee we’re not going to lose a tailgate!

In a nod to the home state of our opponent we will be going “southern” for our tailgate this week. In addition to sweet tea for sipping (or mixing with lemonade and vodka to make a “John Daly”) we will be serving country fried steak or chicken with gravy, shoe peg corn salad, sliced ‘maters, and cornbread. We’ll be washing all of that down with moon pies and RC for dessert. You don’t get any more southern than that folks! (Well, not without serving grits that is.)

Purdue Football 2011

So much for that “Hope and Change” stuff huh?

While Danny Hope cannot control the insane number of injuries from last year, I believe that his margin for error is nil coming into 2011. The downward slide that occurred at the end of the Tiller era seems to be continuing instead of abating. Hope has been given the “vote of confidence” from Burke which means nothing; this is his make or break year.

Last year’s injury plagued campaign does have one silver lining, it got guys on the field to get major minutes that otherwise would have ridden the pine. We will see if this experience translates into true depth or not in 2011.

The home slate features no less than five teams that appeared in Bowl Games in 2010/11 so it does not come easy for Danny and the boys. It does mean though that you have the opportunity to see Purdue become the Spoilermakers all over again!

Just in case the on field performance is not what we would expect, we can always rely on some epic tailgating right? We have some great tailgates planned for 2011 including our first “Jimmy Buffet” tailgate. (Who doesn’t love margaritas and boat drinks?) Also new this year we will be enjoying some southern style “down home” favorites for the “Rocky Top” tailgate the first game of the year!

We will also be featuring the return of some of our tried and true favorites including Chicago Dogs and Make Your Own Pizza for Homecoming and OSU respectively. Oktoberfest also returns for the 8 p.m. kickoff against ND on 10/1/11.

The Stone Cold Tailgating Club is in effect again this year; pay one price and it covers you for the season! The membership levels and costs are listed in the table below. There have been no changes to the pricing from last year.

In addition to the Stone Cold Tailgating Package there is also a lodging package available. With two locations I am going to leave it up to everyone to arrange their lodging each weekend by contacting Brendan and Dawn (goboilerz@yahoo.com) or Susan Franklin (james.franklin@comcast.net).

The revenues from the Stone Cold Lodging package will be put towards house upkeep, utilities, and improvement work. Each location has a “bucket” for you to make your donations.

This will also be our first chance to meet Amelia because Brendan and Dawn will be in town!

Oh, and there is the small matter of a game as well. The Boilers will be taking on their second straight top ten opponent this time in the form of the Suckeyes of tO$U. After a solid win on Wednesday against Bucky I expect to see Purdue gain revenge for another of their road losses on Sunday!

Unfortunately we were not able to secure a group of tickets for the game, so our crowd will be a little smaller this year. But hey, it’s not like that will stop us from having a great time! Since the game is on Sunday we’ll do our partying on Saturday and be ready to watch the Boilers by that 1:00 tip. The group without tickets for the game will likely head to Harry’s to catch the game.

I know this sounds very “high school” but since my parents are going to be out of town I figured we could start Saturday night’s festivities with dinner and drinks at The Lodge. (As if any of us would be worried about getting drunk even if my parents were around right?) We’ll head over the river after dinner to show the kids “how it’s done.”

Lodging Information
As established during the fall, it is asked that you place $10 per person in the black ice bucket at the house. This helps to cover the cost of utilities, snacks, and upkeep. If you are staying two nights it is $15 per person.
