Stone Cold Tailgating Club Charity Event - Homecoming

Vincent the Pooch here to talk to you about the SCTC charity event for the weekend.  First a big shout out to Master for translating and typing up this blog post for me!  It’s so frustrating but I accept that not all humans speak dog; thank goodness that Master can translate.  (Thanks for nothing Google translate!) 

I'm really happy for you humans as it appears that things have changed on that big green lawn that I'm not allowed to pee on; it no longer smells like defeat and sadness every time I go near it.  This weekend I hope that you'll spread some of that happiness as the Stone Cold Tailgating Club will be collecting donations for the dogs and cats that live at the Almost Home Animal Shelter in Lafayette.  My kind and I would greatly appreciate your assistance in the form of any donations. 

The Almost Home humans will accept both cash and "in kind" donations.  A list of donation items can be found below:

• Dog and cat treats. No colored biscuits, please.
• Cat and pocket pet litter. Any brand, clay, corncob or paper litter only, please. We do not use scoopable litter. Special Kitty Cat Litter from Wal-Mart is great!
• Esbilac, KMR and puppy and kitten nursing bottles and nipples
• Advantage or Frontline topical flea preventatives
• Dog toys. Kong toys, hard rubber bones (Nylabone, etc.), tennis balls, rope bones
• Cat toys. Balls with bells, catnip toys, fur mice, etc. Nothing with strings, please.
• Food and water bowls, all sizes (metal only; no plastic bowls please)
• Pet carriers and cages, all sizes
• Rabbit pellets and alfalfa hay
• Hamster food and treats
• Peanut butter
• Heating pads
• Chew sticks, exercise balls, wheels, and small cardboard boxes for pocket pets
• Towels, blankets or rugs, any size, new or used

Game 2: Homecoming

Holy cow, this is unbelievable, for the first time in a long time (2004?) I am excited and optimistic about Purdue Boilermaker Football!!  Coach Brohm and his staff have resurrected a belief in our ability to win that has been missing for a long time; possibly since Joe Tiller's first four seasons.  I expected innovative, fun, and high scoring offense but I honestly had no idea that Brohm was bringing a defensive scheme with him from WKU.  Purdue absolutely dominated a Missouri offense that is projected to be the best in the SEC East.

I hope everyone is as excited as me and is looking forward to not only competing against Michigan but having a real shot at winning!  Michigan comes in with a very high ranking and Captain Insano as their coach but they have a little secret behind that ranking: they can't score on offense.  Michigan has scored a total of 8 TD's all season and only 5 of those have been scored on offense.  I really think that if Purdue can put up a couple of early TD's we could see a close one as Michigan (or scUM if you prefer) has scored 42% of their points in the kicking game, they just aren't designed to play from behind.  Look, I love Captain Insano's intensity and love of rivalry but his offense is built to control the clock and not to put points on the board.

We will be preparing for our titanic homecoming tilt with our favorite tailgate of the year: Oktoberfest!  Break out those Lederhosen, Drindl's, and steins because we're doing this Bavarian style.  We'll have Sue's world famous Kraut Balls, Brats, and German Potato Salad, and pretzels to nosh on pregame.  We'll also have a cooler full of Bavaria's finest Marzen brews.

We will be set up in the W lot, you should be able to find the map to the lot on the right hand side of the blog.  I will also drop a "pin" on Saturday and will share that link on my personal facebook page as well as on the Stone Cold Tailgating Club facebook page.  For first timers we tailgate out of the back of a 1983 Econoline Ambulance and will have a flagpole with two flags on it.  An image of the flags can also be found on the right side of the blog, the top will be an American flag and the bottom is our custom "Old School Boilermakers" flag with an image of the old smokestack from the physical plant that used to be in the middle of campus.  (If you have no idea what smokestack I'm talking about you're young enough that I'll want to see ID when you get to the tailgate before you get into the beer.)

As most of you know The Stone Cold Tailgating Club is just that, a club.  We do not ask that you bring anything to the tailgate, all food and drink are provided.  The tailgating dues are as follows:

$12 for Adults per game
$6 for Kids per game
$55 for the season

There is no definite plan but most likely Paula and I will be coming into town on Friday and will try to make it over to campus for dinner.  Honestly, I'm not sure what will happen or if we'll even make it into town that early but I wanted to put it out as a possibility.

Quick note, this year I'm adding food prep times as we are trying to make sure that the tailgate is broken down in time for everyone to make the pregame ceremonies in the stadium.  I ask that you please respect that and try not to show up at the last minute.

Post game everyone is invited back to SCTC Lodge for cards, beers, etc.

Game 1: Ohio U

Welcome to a new era of Purdue football!  We have a new coach, new lights, beer served in stadium, and hopefully some better results.  We're also playing on a Friday night for the first time, something I'm not super pleased about.  I said before the season that I wasn't taking time off from work to tailgate for this game........luckily I quit my job and have this Friday off!

I normally try and tailor our tailgate food theme to the opponent but frankly the most famous food in Ohio is a Buckeye and I'm not interested in glorifying tO$U like everyone else in the state of Ohio!  We will be doing a low country boil for our meal on Friday night, for those of you with shell fish allergies we will be making a batch without shrimp.  We will have beer and cocktail fixings as usual as well.

As most of you know we do the tailgating club with the price of $12 per person per game.  That covers all of your food and drink for the day.  If you would like to pay for the full season the cost is $60.

We will be parking in the W Lot across from Slater Center again this year.  The great news is that the AAMB will be returning to their traditional pregame concert at Slater!  The "211 Session" was another of our former coach's bright ideas and I'm glad it left with him!  You'll find a map on the right side of this blog that will guide you to the W lot.

Basketball Homecoming 2017

I’m very happy that all of you have decided to join us for the Twelfth Annual Purdue Basketball Homecoming, brought to you by The Stone Cold Tailgating Club.  I’m so glad that all of you can be a part of what now a standing tradition!  It’s a great chance for us to get together and see each other after the long layoff after the dismal football season

The 12:00 tipoff makes any pregame activity at Harry's pretty much impossible since they don't open until 11:00.  Anybody that wants to get to the house early is welcome, we'll have the bar open.  

My plan is to return to the house for late lunch after the game.  We'll head back out to Harry's sometime in the early afternoon, no later than 7:00.  My parent's have said they do not mind ferrying us back to campus to Harry's.

Game 6: Northwestern

Well we've made it this far, we're nearly across the finish line of Purdue Football 2016.  Our second to last home opponent are the Mildcats of Northwestern.  NU managed to lose three of their first four games including a loss to Brock Spack's FCS Illinois State Cardinals.  However they have recovered to a respectable 4-5 (only at Purdue would that be respectable) and will provide a stiff challenge on Saturday.


While this is the traditional "guys weekend" we're of course welcoming of everyone.  The weather is going to be cool and we're going to have all of our warming gear available.  The menu will be soup and grilled cheese with spiced cider.


I for one am looking forward to a relaxing weekend of catching up, drinking beer, and maybe watching football.  As such I am declaring our tailgate a "no politics" zone.  We're all aware of the results of the election, can we please put it behind us?  I've had enough CNN, Fox News, and screaming protests for a while.  Thanks for respecting this rule.

We will head back to the house for dinner and clean up activities on the ambulance.  We will plan to head back over to Campus via Uber after dinner to hang at Harry's and pretend we're young men again.

Game 5: State Penn

I'm sure you've all heard that the Chicago Cubs are in the World Series correct?  If not, you have been living under a rock!  As a result of my desire to attend games at Wrigley the tailgate this week will be scaled down and will be 100% handled by our VP of Ops Susan Franklin.


The Boilers showed some energy and competitiveness under Coach Parker (oh, did I mention that Dollar Bill D finally got a pink slip?)  I look forward to seeing if we can be competitive against a State Penn team that is coming off one of their biggest wins in years.  Hopefully we can catch them overlooking Purdue and score a home upset.


Tailgate will be in the W Lot as normal.  I've only included the plan for Saturday since Friday and Sunday are off the table.  The menu will be lunchmeat sandwiches (turkey, ham, and roast beef) and loaded potato soup.

Game 4 - Homecoming

Welcome back to Purdue Football, it has been a long three weeks since we have been in West Lafayette, IN.  The football team was unimpressive in getting destroyed at Maryland but won a surprisingly well coached game at Illinois last week.  (I guess Darrell has finally gotten the message that his job is on the line.)  Darrell Hazell is now 2-0 at Illinois, do you think they might trade us coaches straight up?


With Purdue Football suffering its worst stretch since the 1990's I figured it would be appropriate to have a 90's themed tailgate.  That decade of our youth seems not so long ago, but as Derk's daughter reminded us at the last tailgate it was the "late 1900's."  Break out your flannel shirts and "who can care less" attitude as we celebrate the decade in which Gen X came of age.  We'll be rocking out to the best of the Seattle sound along with a helping of 1990's R&B!


Our menu will harken back to the halcyon days of the 59, 79, 99 Taco Bell menu with a make your own taco bar.  We considered a keg of Bud Light or MGD, but nobody wants to relive the days of cheap, nasty, mass produced beer.  The Margaritas will be plentiful though and we'll have a few Mexican lagers to go with the remaining Oktoberfest beer.  (What?  They still had a few cases of Hacker Pschor at Costco and I'm a weak, weak man.) 


We will be tailgating in the W Lot across from Slayter Center starting at 8:30 on Saturday morning.  The map to the right will guide you to us.
