I'm sure you've all heard that the Chicago Cubs are in the World Series correct? If not, you have been living under a rock! As a result of my desire to attend games at Wrigley the tailgate this week will be scaled down and will be 100% handled by our VP of Ops Susan Franklin.
The Boilers showed some energy and competitiveness under Coach Parker (oh, did I mention that Dollar Bill D finally got a pink slip?) I look forward to seeing if we can be competitive against a State Penn team that is coming off one of their biggest wins in years. Hopefully we can catch them overlooking Purdue and score a home upset.
Tailgate will be in the W Lot as normal. I've only included the plan for Saturday since Friday and Sunday are off the table. The menu will be lunchmeat sandwiches (turkey, ham, and roast beef) and loaded potato soup.

Game 4 - Homecoming
Welcome back to Purdue Football, it has been a long three weeks since we have been in West Lafayette, IN. The football team was unimpressive in getting destroyed at Maryland but won a surprisingly well coached game at Illinois last week. (I guess Darrell has finally gotten the message that his job is on the line.) Darrell Hazell is now 2-0 at Illinois, do you think they might trade us coaches straight up?
With Purdue Football suffering its worst stretch since the 1990's I figured it would be appropriate to have a 90's themed tailgate. That decade of our youth seems not so long ago, but as Derk's daughter reminded us at the last tailgate it was the "late 1900's." Break out your flannel shirts and "who can care less" attitude as we celebrate the decade in which Gen X came of age. We'll be rocking out to the best of the Seattle sound along with a helping of 1990's R&B!
Our menu will harken back to the halcyon days of the 59, 79, 99 Taco Bell menu with a make your own taco bar. We considered a keg of Bud Light or MGD, but nobody wants to relive the days of cheap, nasty, mass produced beer. The Margaritas will be plentiful though and we'll have a few Mexican lagers to go with the remaining Oktoberfest beer. (What? They still had a few cases of Hacker Pschor at Costco and I'm a weak, weak man.)
We will be tailgating in the W Lot across from Slayter Center starting at 8:30 on Saturday morning. The map to the right will guide you to us.

We will return to the tailgate postgame to allow the traffic to thin out. Everyone is invited over for dinner at the SCTC Lodge on Saturday night. It will be a relatively small group but there will be the usual games and beers in the basement.

Game 3: Oktoberfest
Purdue welcomes in the Nevada Wolfpack for what I'm sure will be another stellar display of Boilermaker football on Saturday. In all seriousness, it's almost not even fair to joke about the mess this program is right now. Hazell is taking shots from former QB's and stories are starting to leak out painting him as an uninvolved leader. This is going to get UGLY by the end, let's just end it now and tank the season to draft #1 next spring........what that's not an option?

I learned last week that there is a "mercy rule" in college football where the coaches can agree to play 12 minute quarters with running clocks if the game is out of reach. I propose we do that from the first kickoff for the remainder of the season.

Game 2 - The Bearcats
Well, we come out of game one with a W and some huge surprises. The biggest shock was that while leading at halftime we actually mad defensive adjustments to COUNTER what the offense was doing! The second shock was that they didn't find some excuse not to give Markel Jones the ball. That kid is a stud, he only gets better as the game goes on.
The Cincinnati Bearcats were the first opponent of the Hazell era and it would not be an understatement to say that they showed what was to come. The Boilers trailed 14-7 at the half of that game and ended up losing 42-7. They did struggle to put away Middle Tennessee State last week so there is a good chance that we're going to get a good game this week.
We will be celebrating our annual Kid's Game this week, a hearty SCTC tailgating welcome to one and all! The house will be open for anyone that wants to come by anytime after 5:00 eastern. We'll have crafts for the kids and I'm sure Purdue Pete will stop by to drop gifts!
We will be celebrating the hometown of our opponent with a tailgating meal of Skyline Chili. We will have traditional cheese coneys and the fixings for a classic three or five way! The weather forecast is a bit dicey on Saturday morning but it is supposed to be clear by game time. If there is inclement weather we will plan to stay at the house to tailgate. Please contact me in the morning or check the SCTC facebook page to determine where we are on Saturday morning.

Game 1 - Eastern Kentucky University
Welcome to yet another (likely frustrating) year of Purdue football! We open the season with the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky, the last FCS opponent we are likely ever to see in Ross-Ade. The Big Ten is going to a 9 game conference schedule and eliminating FCS games for member schools so they can try and pump up strength of schedule for the teams that actually compete to go to the playoffs.
The good news is that the Boilermakers won the lone previous meeting against the Colonels with a 48-6 victory back in 2012. On paper the Boilermakers should have the advantage as EKU returns only 9 starters from last year’s team and has a new coaching staff. However, games are played on the field and not on paper. There are two factors that will make me sweat about this FCS opponent:
1. EKU has a new starting QB by the name of Maty Mauk. That might sound familiar to you because he went 17-5 with 4,373 yds and 42 touchdowns over three years at Missouri. (They play in the SEC east so those are pretty good numbers.
2. The coaching genius of Darrell "stick to the plan" Hazell on our sideline. If I'm looking at Purdue's roster from EKU's perspective I say: "they have superior athletes, but with him coaching I like our chances."
Hopefully I’m wrong and this is the year that the rebuild makes an impact. I would love to see people actually showing up at Ross-Ade for the football and not for the beer garden at some point!
Regarding this year’s tailgating we will be permanently moved back to the W lot. We spent two seasons up on the golf course but with the redesign of the south course they are limiting parking and have banned ambulances up there. Since the amount of parking is going to vary from week to week depending on the ground conditions I preferred to be in a lot that gave us a consistent meeting point.
As a refresher the W lot is the space just south of Slater Center. There is a paved lot but there also appears to be more grass parking this year, we’ll have to let everyone know where we will be (grass or asphalt) after the first game.
This week will be a smaller group and a lighter tailgate than normal. Paula and I are leaving directly from the parking lot to head back to Chicago to catch a flight so there will be no planned post game tailgate.
Our menu this week will pay tribute to the greatest of Kentucky exports, Kentucky Fried Chicken. (I know some will argue that bourbon is their greatest export but we all know my bourbon position.) We have found a recipe that is supposed to be the original 11 herbs and spices used in KFC, so we’ll prepare some for us and will be the judge of the accuracy. We’ll also have our usual assortment of sides and beverages.

Bucket Game 2015
The Bucket Game returns to Ross-Ade for the first time since 2012 (a 56-35 Boilermaker win) and we're probably better off for it since we haven't had to watch IU celebrate their back to back bucket wins on our home turf. Indiana has put together several 2 game win streaks in the bucket game but have not won 3 or more straight games since they held the bucket from 1944-1947. Yes we're looking at that kind of historic futility from Darrell Hazell's program.
Purdue did not look terrible against Iowa but Indiana comes in off of a strong win at Maryland and an impressive performance against Michigan the weekend before. Indiana will also be charged up because with a win they will make themselves bowl eligible at 6-6. (Think about that, a team that would be 2-6 in Big Ten play would be bowl eligible.) It is a rivalry game so anything can happen and hopefully Purdue will find a way to win!
It projects to be on the cool side on Saturday so we will have our heating devices, hot chocolate, and spiced cider. We'll be having our traditional pregame meal of chili and ham and cheese. We will be set up in the W lot with our traditional flag up and the new 10x20 gold tent.
