The SCTC had a great road trip to Iowa last week, putting our "We never lose a party" motto to the test after the Boilers dropped a closer than expected game on the road. Iowa was fun, but I look forward to tailgating at home and the friendly confines of Ross-Ade Stadium!
Illinois comes to town hot off a shocking upset win against Wisconsin at home last weekend. I would have said before the season that this would be an easy "W" but now I'm not so sure. The Illini played above their heads last week, hopefully the Boilers can bring them back to earth and keep the Cannon at home. (For those not in the know, we do have a trophy with Illinois. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois%E2%80%93Purdue_football_rivalry)
We will be honoring our guests from The Land of Lincoln (don't get me started on the fact that Lincoln was born in Kentucky and raised in Indiana) by serving a Chicago area classic: Baked Mostaccioli. I had never heard of such a thing until I moved to the Chicago area, but it's about as Chicago as it gets. Now, I know that downstate Illinois people would be upset that I am picking a "Chicago dish" to represent their entire state but.........well even in Illinois nobody cares what downstate thinks.
We'll be serving a selection of beers from Illinois brewers at the tailgate. I've included some Brickstone from Bourbonnais, IL in honor of our two BBCHS alums (Joel and Paula.) We might even have an appearance of a bottle of a certain specialty grain alcohol that you can only find in the Chicago area: Malort. You're world will never be the same once you have tried the Malort.
We will be set up in the W lot as normal, I hope to see everyone there.

Game 5: Road Trip to Iowa
A much smaller subset of the Stone Cold Tailgating Club goes on the road this week to Iowa. We're hoping for some good weather and a competitive game. We will be going for back to back Homecoming wins!
We will have two Boilers and a couple of Hawkeye fans joining us to tailgate. We'll bring all the food and drink, just need everyone to chip in the $12 per person standard tailgating costs.
Our parking plan for the weekend won't be set until Saturday morning. Tara will check the lots and we will make a decision then. Our target will be the Myrtle Ave lot with the back up plan of Lot 65.

Game 4: Homecoming
We've reached the best time of the year, fall weather is settling in and a return to our Alma Mater for the annual Homecoming game. This year's tilt is against the Maryland Terrapins and hopefully our boys can get in the win column after back to back hard Big Ten losses.
Maryland started strong against a ranked team in Syracuse but has lost three straight after that win, losing by 59 points to Penn State two weeks ago. The Maryland QB has less passing yards than Sindelar.........who has only really played 2.25 games. Long story short this could be a good chance to get back in the W column for the Boilermakers.
We will be setting up in the W Lot on Saturday morning, for those doing Alumni band we're on your way from the practice field to Slater. Everyone knows at this point how to find us I think, if you look to the right of the blog there are lot diagrams and photos of the ambulance.
We are doing a "Kegs 'n Eggs" theme because the only thing I could think of that is Maryland related is crab cakes and well, we're higher end but not that fancy. We will have three types of egg casserole, some breakfast meats, and biscuits and gravy. We will have a full selection of drinks including of course the fixings for Bloody Marys and Mimosas, the breakfast drinks of champions!

Week 3: Oktoberfest Tailgate (Oh and Minnesota Comes to Town)
Sorry to have missed all the "fun" against TCU two weeks ago. Watching a little bit of the tape it looked like a rough first start for Plummer. Hopefully Sindelar will be back this weekend to do battle with the Golden Gophers!
This is a huge game for Purdue in terms of Bowl eligibility. Additionally we need to blunt any momentum that the Gophers have gained, as they are looking to be that team to jump up and challenge Wisconsin in the Big Ten West. (We need to be that team!)
Looking forward to seeing everyone coming at the W lot. At this point I think everyone pretty much knows where we are and what to look for to find us, we'll see you there if you don't want to come by the house on Saturday.

Week 1: Vanderbilt Family Weekend
Luckily I was on a cruise ship and was unable to watch the Boilermaker meltdown in week 1 at Nevada. I can only assume the coaching staff has identified the root of the issue and are taking steps to address it before our home opener on Saturday against the Commodores of Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt, the lone academic institution in the SEC, is somewhat like Purdue in that they are named for their founder and not the state in which they reside. Shipping Magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt provided the $1.0M endowment to found the university in the post Civil War era in spite of the fact that he had never been to the south. Their nickname "The Commodores" is derived from Cornelius' own nickname.
Vandy has the distinction of residing mostly in the cellar of the SEC for most of their history. Their biggest claim to fame is having been where Paul "Bear" Bryant coached prior to Alabama. (Unless you want to count producing the mercurial Jay Cutler.) I would say that their kind of hard to dislike, I mean this comes from their own athletics page:
Vanderbilt fields fewer teams than any of its rivals and sometimes lacks the national prominence enjoyed by schools such as the University of Florida or the University of Kentucky.
Let's just say this, win or lose both teams can leave the field knowing that they lost to fellow student athletes and not to hired guns.
In honor of our visitors from the great state of Tennessee we will be doing a lunch meal that is southern to the core: the classic meat and three. For those not in the know, in lunch counters throughout the south a traditional meal at lunchtime is to have a choice of meat and three vegetables know as the meat and three.
Meat: Pulled Pork and/or Turkey Meatloaf
Veggies: Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Corn Bread, and Macaroni Salad (Yes, all of those items are considered vegetables in the south.)
We'll be welcoming in the families this weekend with lots of activity for the kids. I've listed below a summary of the activities/contests we have planned to keep them occupied while they are visiting "God's Country." We will have "to go" bags for the kids in the morning including fruit snacks and granola bars so there will be no breakfast at the house.
Just a few reminders of the house rules at the lodge:
All of our kids activity will be based around "Purdue Challenges" that will highlight some of the great programs in and around the University. We will declare winners but really this is all for fun!

I'll be arriving on Friday afternoon to start the pulled pork (have to get a good 4 hours of smoke on the pork shoulders) so feel free to drop in anytime after 4:00 p.m. and enjoy a beer while I tend to the smoker.

We are excited for the return of Kegs and Eggs as a theme for Homecoming. If you are an AAMB alum and you are marching and planning to come to the tailgate I need to know by 9/28 please, as I will be traveling the weekend before actual Homecoming.
With so many people unable to make the Maryland game due to schedule conflicts, we are hosting an alternate SCTC Homecoming on 10/26 vs. Illinois. I look forward to seeing our regular attendees there that weekend!

Game 6: Iowa
The Boilermakers were not able to back up their historic OSU win with at win in Lansing last weekend. Hopefully they can come home and set the ship right against the Hawkeyes. The Boilers looked way off against Sparty, but hopefully coming home will set things right.
We will have a bit of NOLA coming to town with us for this game, as we serve up some Gumbo, Muffaletta, and of course a batch of my world famous (or infamous) hurricanes. We will also have some warm drinks on hand as it is probably going to be chilly on Saturday.
I think everyone knows where to find us by now, but as a reminder there is a map on the blog and I'll drop a pin on Saturday to put on the facebook page.
It's guys weekend, so we'll be heading to Harry's on Friday night if anyone wants to join us?

Game 5: Oktoberfest Tailgate!
If it seems like it's been a month since we last saw everyone in West Lafayette for Boilermaker football.....that's because it has been a month since our last home game! This has been a long road stretch, and it has coincided with the Boilermakers playing some of their best football of the year. They put a beat down on the Illini on Saturday, running their record in Homecoming games to a perfect 3-0 in 2018.
This weekend we will be welcoming in the shameful tO$U who has clearly demonstrated that they care more about winning than they do about being decent human beings by retaining Urban Meyer. In addition to their just normal disregard for the amateur status of their athletes, they now have added not caring about having physically abusive assistant coaches to their moral corruptness. Let's face facts, they have the talent of a top five team and they're going to be hard to beat, but at least we're not giving up the moral high ground to win!
The long break also means that we have pushed our favorite Oktoberfest tailgate to well past the "proper" timing for such a party. While the Oktoberfest Munich shut down several weeks ago, we'll plan to keep the party rolling in West Lafayette this weekend with a selection of German beers and traditional dress.

We welcome in an ACC opponent this week for Homecoming. When the #23 Eagles roll into West Lafayette it will be the first time that Purdue has ever faced them. It is hard to know what to expect given that BC has only played one real opponent and Purdue has lost three games by a total of eight points. I would like to think the Boilers give us a great Homecoming gift and get in the W column on Saturday!

You all probably also know that I explore almost every place I travel to by trying their local food specialties and their beer. On the food front we will have a good menu including Lobster Rolls, Cape Cod chips, and our own take on Corn Chowder in the form of a side salad. I'm sure that you all have heard of a little company called Sam Adams, but I'm here to tell you that there is a wide array of spectacular beers in the New England region and Boston specifically. While we won't have only New England beers, we will have some to sample. (We will also have Hot Dogs for those of you that aren't keen on Lobster Rolls.)

Game 3: Missouri
Missouri, or Misery as my lovely wife calls it. Misery is a pretty good description of the Purdue season thus far, hopefully we can turn it around this weekend.
We'll be competing under the lights on Saturday, so we'll be starting our tailgating a little later. We'll be serving a "state fair" themed menu as I have no idea what food is unique to Missouri. We'll have pork tenderloin sandwiches, roasted corn, and plenty of beverages.
We will meet at the W lot as usual, there is a map on the right side of the blog and I will drop a pin when we get to the lot. Most everyone knows the drill by now!

Charity Events 2018
As opposed to doing one item per week we are going to dedicate our service projects by month this year. We will be accepting any and all donations at tailgates so we can give back to the community that we spend a lot of time in. The events will be as follows:

November - Lafayette Food Pantry

Vincent the Pooch here to talk to you about the SCTC charity event for September. First a big thanks to Master for typing, as you know I'm getting older and I just can't see the computer screen as well anymore. (I just refuse to wear corrective dog lenses, that's just not a flattering look.)
I'm always glad to see all you humans in Lafayette during football season, though some of you seem to be a little goofy after the games. I'm lucky to have a great rescue home but some dogs (and cats) don't have a huge extended family like I have to love on me. This September I hope that you'll spread some of that love as the Stone Cold Tailgating Club will be collecting donations for the dogs and cats that live at the Almost Home Animal Shelter in Lafayette. My kind and I would greatly appreciate your assistance in the form of any donations.
The Almost Home humans will accept both cash and "in kind" donations. A list of donation items can be found below:

- Advantage or Frontline topical flea preventatives
- Dog toys. Kong toys, hard rubber bones (Nylabone, etc.), tennis balls, rope bones
- Cat toys. Balls with bells, catnip toys, fur mice, etc. Nothing with strings, please.
- Food and water bowls, all sizes (metal only; no plastic bowls please)
- Pet carriers and cages, all sizes
- Rabbit pellets and alfalfa hay
- Hamster food and treats
- Peanut butter
- Heating pads
- Chew sticks, exercise balls, wheels, and small cardboard boxes for pocket pets

Game 2: Family Weekend
We didn't get the result we wanted in Week 1 but they boys fought back after falling behind early. Who knows, with a proper application of the rule book in the fourth quarter they might have had a shot at the win? There was a lot to like about Thursday night, especially the emergence of super freshman Rondale Moore. In his first game as a Boilermaker he broke the school record for total yards in a game, this kid is going to be great. Here's a video of all 180 lbs of him lifting 600 lbs:
This week we welcome in the Eagles of Eastern Michigan for a noon tilt in West Lafayette, IN. We have very little history with the Eagles playing them on two previous occasions in 1991 and 2012. The margins of victory have been significant in both games and I would hope for more of the same. I can say that EMU was the first victory I witnessed as a student at Purdue on opening day September 7, 1991! I remember thinking that this Jim Colletto guy just might be a good coach.........
We will be celebrating family day with the kids in attendance for the weekend. We'll be doing a meal of hamburgers and french fries with plenty of adult and "kid friendly" beverages. We're looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.
We're parked in the W Lot and have a total of three parking passes. We should be able to get everyone from the house over and parked in the lot together. Game 1: Northwestern
Greetings fellow Boilermakers and welcome to Purdue Football 2018! We are very excited to see if Coach Brohm and the team can build on last year's success and keep Purdue Football at least relevant in the Big Ten West.
It's a bit of an odd situation starting the season on a Thursday, especially since it comes against a Big Ten opponent. (I didn't look it up but I can't remember us opening against a Big Ten opponent......EVER.) Northwestern comes in with some questions, especially at QB after losing their starter to a knee injury in their bowl game, but Pat Fitzgerald has built a solid program and I expect them to be potent on the offensive side of the ball.
Given that Northwestern bills themselves as "Chicago's Big Ten Team" (good luck finding anyone that buys into that,) we will be having a Chicago Themed menu. For the deep dish fans I'm sorry to report that we'll just be having some Chicago Style hot dogs and Chicago brewed beer.
I'm sure that you have all seen the photos and are aware that we have upgraded our tailgating ambulance. We've moved into the late 90's (from the 1983 version we had previously.) The bay is slightly larger, but the storage space is going to be a bit different than you are used to, there is no drop down bar for example. We have had it painted but additional decorations and adornments will take some additional time to secure. Game 4: Nebraska
Remember boys and girls, then "N" stands for knowledge at Nebraska......
We will welcome Nebraska into Ross-Aide Stadium for a Saturday night tilt under the lights. This would be a great win for the Boilermakers, a way to make the statement that we truly are not a bottom feeder program any longer.
We'll have a larger party this week as we celebrate our annual "guys weekend." (We know, it's not really a guy's weekend anymore, it's more of an idea than a mandate.) We will have a lot of people in town that we don't see regularly and we look forward to a good time to be had by all. We will be doing our "Make Your Own Pizza" tailgate with a multitude of drink options.
We're going to be set up in the W Lot (see the maps on the right side of the blog,) I don't think anyone will have a tough time finding us. We will have our flags up as usual and the Ambulance is pretty easy to spot.
We will be gathering in town on Friday night to do a night out at Harry's. Paula usually plans a costumed bar crawl in Chicago for Halloween but since we're going to be in Lafayette this year I thought we would move the party to Harry's. We always try to do a theme for our costume nights and this year's is: 1997. That's right, we're dressing as our selves circa 1997. (Greg, I know you still have an Alamo Bowl t-shirt hanging around.)

Game 3: Minnesota
It is a bittersweet game this weekend, the university will be recognizing the 20th anniversary of the 1997 team, but unfortunately Coach Tiller’s passing will hang over the celebrations. Coach Tiller meant so much to Purdue and I expect to see him honored appropriately. The teams will be wearing patches in his honor and Purdue will be wearing the true “old gold” helmets from 1997.
Minnesota comes to town riding high on rowing their boat the PJ Fleck way. Just remember that he kept saying he was interested in Purdue and then declined the interview because he thought better jobs would be available. Nobody says our football program is unworthy but us! Just remember that he kept saying he was interested in Purdue and then declined the interview because he thought better jobs would be available. Nobody says our football program is unworthy but us! (Minnesota by the way was not the job he thought he would get, he thought Oregon was going to come calling.) I want the Boilers to beat up on his smug butt on Saturday!

Game 2: Homecoming
Holy cow, this is unbelievable, for the first time in a long time (2004?) I am excited and optimistic about Purdue Boilermaker Football!! Coach Brohm and his staff have resurrected a belief in our ability to win that has been missing for a long time; possibly since Joe Tiller's first four seasons. I expected innovative, fun, and high scoring offense but I honestly had no idea that Brohm was bringing a defensive scheme with him from WKU. Purdue absolutely dominated a Missouri offense that is projected to be the best in the SEC East.
I hope everyone is as excited as me and is looking forward to not only competing against Michigan but having a real shot at winning! Michigan comes in with a very high ranking and Captain Insano as their coach but they have a little secret behind that ranking: they can't score on offense. Michigan has scored a total of 8 TD's all season and only 5 of those have been scored on offense. I really think that if Purdue can put up a couple of early TD's we could see a close one as Michigan (or scUM if you prefer) has scored 42% of their points in the kicking game, they just aren't designed to play from behind. Look, I love Captain Insano's intensity and love of rivalry but his offense is built to control the clock and not to put points on the board.
We will be preparing for our titanic homecoming tilt with our favorite tailgate of the year: Oktoberfest! Break out those Lederhosen, Drindl's, and steins because we're doing this Bavarian style. We'll have Sue's world famous Kraut Balls, Brats, and German Potato Salad, and pretzels to nosh on pregame. We'll also have a cooler full of Bavaria's finest Marzen brews.
We will be set up in the W lot, you should be able to find the map to the lot on the right hand side of the blog. I will also drop a "pin" on Saturday and will share that link on my personal facebook page as well as on the Stone Cold Tailgating Club facebook page. For first timers we tailgate out of the back of a 1983 Econoline Ambulance and will have a flagpole with two flags on it. An image of the flags can also be found on the right side of the blog, the top will be an American flag and the bottom is our custom "Old School Boilermakers" flag with an image of the old smokestack from the physical plant that used to be in the middle of campus. (If you have no idea what smokestack I'm talking about you're young enough that I'll want to see ID when you get to the tailgate before you get into the beer.)
As most of you know The Stone Cold Tailgating Club is just that, a club. We do not ask that you bring anything to the tailgate, all food and drink are provided. The tailgating dues are as follows:
$12 for Adults per game
$6 for Kids per game
$55 for the season

Game 1: Ohio U
Welcome to a new era of Purdue football! We have a new coach, new lights, beer served in stadium, and hopefully some better results. We're also playing on a Friday night for the first time, something I'm not super pleased about. I said before the season that I wasn't taking time off from work to tailgate for this game........luckily I quit my job and have this Friday off!
I normally try and tailor our tailgate food theme to the opponent but frankly the most famous food in Ohio is a Buckeye and I'm not interested in glorifying tO$U like everyone else in the state of Ohio! We will be doing a low country boil for our meal on Friday night, for those of you with shell fish allergies we will be making a batch without shrimp. We will have beer and cocktail fixings as usual as well.
As most of you know we do the tailgating club with the price of $12 per person per game. That covers all of your food and drink for the day. If you would like to pay for the full season the cost is $60.
We will be parking in the W Lot across from Slater Center again this year. The great news is that the AAMB will be returning to their traditional pregame concert at Slater! The "211 Session" was another of our former coach's bright ideas and I'm glad it left with him! You'll find a map on the right side of this blog that will guide you to the W lot.

I normally try and tailor our tailgate food theme to the opponent but frankly the most famous food in Ohio is a Buckeye and I'm not interested in glorifying tO$U like everyone else in the state of Ohio! We will be doing a low country boil for our meal on Friday night, for those of you with shell fish allergies we will be making a batch without shrimp. We will have beer and cocktail fixings as usual as well.

Basketball Homecoming 2017

The 12:00 tipoff makes any pregame activity at Harry's pretty much impossible since they don't open until 11:00. Anybody that wants to get to the house early is welcome, we'll have the bar open.
My plan is to return to the house for late lunch after the game. We'll head back out to Harry's sometime in the early afternoon, no later than 7:00. My parent's have said they do not mind ferrying us back to campus to Harry's.

Game 6: Northwestern
Well we've made it this far, we're nearly across the finish line of Purdue Football 2016. Our second to last home opponent are the Mildcats of Northwestern. NU managed to lose three of their first four games including a loss to Brock Spack's FCS Illinois State Cardinals. However they have recovered to a respectable 4-5 (only at Purdue would that be respectable) and will provide a stiff challenge on Saturday.
While this is the traditional "guys weekend" we're of course welcoming of everyone. The weather is going to be cool and we're going to have all of our warming gear available. The menu will be soup and grilled cheese with spiced cider.
I for one am looking forward to a relaxing weekend of catching up, drinking beer, and maybe watching football. As such I am declaring our tailgate a "no politics" zone. We're all aware of the results of the election, can we please put it behind us? I've had enough CNN, Fox News, and screaming protests for a while. Thanks for respecting this rule.
